Intuition Ale Works I-10 IPA

Editor’s Note: Peter contacted me a while back about writing some beer reviews and a homebrewing column. Everyone welcome Peter to LouisvilleBeer.com!

This can of Intuition’s I-10 IPA was the last of a six-pack that I obtained from the brewery in Jacksonville, Florida while on vacation this summer. Reluctance set in right before cracking it open (on account of it being my last and the fact that it’s unavailable in KY), but that reluctance quickly transformed into excitement when I saw its beautiful copper color being poured into a tulip glass. The pour from the can gave me a foamy, tan head that faded slightly after a few minutes but continued to leave nice lacing along the wall of the glass.

The aroma was very floral and somewhat piney. Though it had a good aroma, it could have packed a more powerful punch in that department. The taste, however, left nothing to be desired. Four different varieties of American hops provided an extremely complex hop character that gave my taste buds a good Sunday afternoon workout. A strong floral and citrus character are foremost, but hints of grapefruit, pine and a myriad of other subtle tastes lingered long after the sip was swallowed. There is a malty sweetness that helps to balance out some of the hops but are mostly overpowered by the hoppy backbone. This is a prime example of an American-style IPA; the hoppier the better.

Coming in at just over 7% ABV, there is a slight alcoholic taste which is once again defeated by the roundhouse kick to the mouth by the hops. Their taphouse in Jacksonville is also worth a trip if you happen to be in the area. They had over 15 beers on tap that were produced in-house and a brewery that was packed to the brim with skids of eagerly awaiting empty cans and floor-to-ceiling fermenters. Overall, this is a great beer that I recommend to anyone that is able to get their hands on it.
